The Ladies quota is a small block of berths on each train — typically six in Sleeper class, with more on some trains and classes — reserved for women travelling alone or with children under 12. Any adult woman can book it regardless of age by choosing “Ladies” as the quota on IRCTC. It has its own waitlist, and berths not sold under it return to the general pool at chart time.
What the Ladies quota is
Indian Railways earmarks a small block of berths on each reserved train as a Ladies quota (code LD), so that a woman travelling alone is not placed in a compartment full of strangers by the accident of the booking order. The traditional allocation is six berths in Sleeper class per train; many trains now also carry a Ladies block in AC 3-tier, and some in other classes. The exact number varies by train and is visible only as the LD availability for that train.
Who can book it
- Any adult woman, of any age, travelling alone.
- A woman travelling with children under 12.
- A group of women — every adult on the booking must be female. A husband, brother or adult son on the same PNR makes the booking ineligible.
It is not the same thing as the lower-berth preference for women over 45, senior citizens and pregnant women. That one applies within the general quota and affects which berth you get; the Ladies quota is a different pool and affects whether you get one at all. How to book it
- On IRCTC, search the journey and set the Quota dropdown to “Ladies”.
- The availability shown is now the Ladies quota only. It has its own waitlist, with the prefix LDWL — small, so it clears slowly, but the general waitlist is often far longer.
- Add the passengers (women and children only), pay as usual.
If the Ladies quota shows a waitlist and the general quota shows AVAILABLE, book general — a confirmed berth in the general quota beats a waitlisted one in any quota. If both are waitlisted, compare the two waitlists honestly; LDWL 2 on a train with six LD berths needs two cancellations from a very small pool.
What happens to unsold Ladies berths
At chart preparation, Ladies berths that were not booked are released to the general waitlist like every other quota’s leftovers (see chart preparation). So the quota never wastes a berth — but it also means an LDWL ticket that has not cleared by the chart will not clear.

No. The quota is for women travelling alone or with children under 12. A booking under it can carry only female adult passengers and children.
Are Ladies quota berths lower berths?
Not necessarily. The Ladies quota is a separate set of berths; the lower-berth preference for women over 45, senior citizens and pregnant women is a different rule that applies within the general quota.
Is the Ladies quota available in Tatkal?
No. Ladies quota is booked under the general reservation window, up to 60 days in advance.
