Live running status comes from NTES — the National Train Enquiry System at enquiry.indianrail.gov.in and the “Where is my Train” style apps that read it. It shows the last reported station, the current delay and expected arrival times. A train’s delay on one day tells you less than its pattern: some trains average under fifteen minutes late and some routinely run two hours behind, and that pattern is what should shape your connection and arrival plans.
Where the live status comes from
Every running-status app in India reads the same source: NTES, the National Train Enquiry System, at enquiry.indianrail.gov.in, and the Railways’ own “Where is my Train”-style feeds. Enter the train number and the start date — the date the train left its origin, which for a two-day train is not today — and it shows the last station the train was reported at, the delay there, and expected times at every station ahead.
- “Last reported at” is a control point, not GPS. Between reporting stations the delay figure is a projection.
- Expected times move. A train shown 40 minutes late at noon can be 90 minutes late by three and 20 minutes late at the terminus.
- “No data” or “Not started” means the train has not yet left its origin, or has not reached its first reporting station. It appears once it has.
Why the pattern matters more than today’s number
The delay you can see right now tells you about a train that is already running. The train you are deciding whether to book leaves next week. What you need is not its status but its habit: over the last month or two, how late has it usually reached your station, and how bad were the bad days?
Some patterns worth knowing before you look:
- Priority is real. Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat and Duronto trains are given the line ahead of others and keep to time far better. Ordinary Mail/Express trains wait for them.
- Geography is real. Trains through the Ghaziabad–Kanpur–Prayagraj– Mughalsarai corridor and across Bihar run on the most congested track in the country; delays of one to three hours are routine on some services.
- Winter fog (December to early February) across north India doubles or triples delays and cancels trains outright. A summer delay record says nothing about January.
- Trains recover. Timetables carry slack, especially near the terminus. A train two hours late mid-route often arrives forty minutes late. The number at your station is the one to look at.
- Origin departure is usually on time. Delay accumulates. Boarding at the origin of a train has a different risk profile from boarding it 800 km later.
How to use it before you book
- Look up the train’s recent runs at your arrival station, not its terminus.
- Ask what the delay does to the thing after the train: a connection, an exam, a flight, the last bus home. Then size the gap — see planning connections.
- If the pattern is bad and the consequence is severe, a slower train with a better record is often the faster one in practice.

Why does the running status show “no data” for my train?
The train has not yet started, or has not passed a reporting station since starting. Status appears once the train leaves its origin and is reported at the first control point.
Does a train make up lost time?
Sometimes, on sections with slack in the timetable — especially near the destination. Many long-distance trains arrive closer to time than their worst mid-route delay suggests, which is why the history at your station matters more than the delay you see now.
Which trains are most reliable?
Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat and Duronto trains have priority on the track and the best records. Ordinary Mail/Express trains on congested routes — through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar especially, and in winter fog — run late most often.
