Vikalp, the Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme, lets you opt in at booking (or later, before the chart) for up to seven alternate trains on the same route. If your ticket is still fully waitlisted when the chart is prepared, the railway may move it, at no extra fare, to one of those trains departing between 30 minutes and 72 hours after your original one, in the same class. Either everyone on the PNR moves or nobody does, the boarding or destination station may become a nearby one, and there is no guarantee a berth exists. Check the PNR after the chart: it shows the new train.

What Vikalp is
Vikalp is the railway’s Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme. When you book a waitlisted e-ticket, you can tick Vikalp and choose up to seven other trains on the same route. If your ticket is still fully waitlisted when the chart of your original train is prepared, the railway may move you to one of those trains instead of cancelling the ticket. There is no charge for opting in and no extra fare if you are moved.
It is a second chance, not a promise. You are moved only if a berth is actually free on an alternate train after that train’s own chart.
Who qualifies
- The ticket must have Vikalp opted — at booking, or afterwards from the booking’s own page, any time before the chart.
- It must be fully waitlisted at the chart. A ticket where even one passenger is confirmed or RAC is not moved.
- Either everyone on the PNR is moved or nobody is; the group is never split.
- The move is in the same class you booked. You are not offered a higher or lower class.
The rules that catch people out

How to know if you were moved
Check the PNR after the original train’s chart is prepared. If Vikalp moved you, the status shows the new train number, date, coach and berth. If it still shows a waitlist, no berth was found on any alternate train, and the ticket is cancelled with the usual refund. There is no message you have to wait for beyond the PNR itself — see what happens to a waiting list after the chart.
Is it worth opting in?
Almost always yes, because it costs nothing and only applies when the alternative is a cancelled ticket. Two cautions. Choose alternate trains you would actually take: a train leaving two days later, from a different station, is a poor rescue if you cannot travel then. Questions people ask
Does Vikalp cost extra?
No. There is no charge to opt in and no extra fare if you are moved, even to a faster or more expensive train. Equally, no fare difference is refunded if the alternate train is cheaper.
Can I opt for Vikalp after booking?
Yes, for a waitlisted e-ticket, from the booking's own page until the chart is prepared. The option is only offered on trains and routes where alternate trains exist.
Does Vikalp guarantee a confirmed seat?
No. It only puts you in line for berths that are free on the alternate trains after their own charts. If none are free, the ticket stays waitlisted on the original train and is cancelled with the usual refund.
Can I cancel after Vikalp moves my ticket?
Yes, but it is then treated as a confirmed ticket: the normal cancellation charges for a confirmed booking apply, and after the alternate train's chart the usual cut-off applies. Decide before the move if you can.
