Current availability answers “can I buy a ticket for this station pair and class right now?” Chart vacancy answers “which berth is physically unoccupied, and for what part of the route, according to the prepared chart?” They overlap, but they are not the same dataset or question. That is why a train can show no full-journey ticket while still having a berth vacant between intermediate stations.
The simplest difference
Current availability is booking inventory. Chart vacancy is occupancy information. One tells you whether the railway is selling a ticket for your current search; the other tells you which specific berth is unoccupied in the prepared reservation chart and for which part of the route.
Example: why the numbers can disagree
Suppose a berth is booked Ranchi → Rourkela and again Bhubaneswar → Puri. It is physically vacant only from Rourkela → Bhubaneswar. That gap can appear in the chart even if a Ranchi → Puri current-booking search shows no full-journey seat. Both results can be correct at the same time.
Which one should you use?
- You want to buy a ticket now: check current availability / the official booking channel.
- You want to know exactly what is empty: check train chart vacancy.
- You are travelling only part of the route: inspect station-to-station vacancy, not just a train-wide count.
- You are onboard: use vacancy as supporting information and ask the TTE about allotment.
