A train berth is not simply empty or occupied
Long-distance reservations are made between station pairs. Because different passengers can use the same berth on different parts of the route, one berth can change state several times during a journey.
A simple four-station example

For a passenger going B → C, B2/37 is useful. For a passenger going A → D, it is not a full-journey vacancy. A good chart-vacancy tool must preserve that distinction.
Why continuity matters
If the same berth is vacant on B → C and C → D, those adjacent sections form one continuous B → D vacancy window. But if it is vacant on A → B, occupied on B → C, and vacant again on C → D, those are two separate windows and should never be joined.
